Psalms one hundred twenty-nine begins with the phrase, “[[A Song of degrees.]]” which breaks down, “A Song” or “a musical or lyrical ode” “of degrees” which means “pertaining to steps, stairs and ascents”, and in verse one the Psalmist said, “Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth” where we read,
Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
The verse begins, “Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “many a time” or “a great, abounding and numerous amount of accounts” “have they afflicted me” which means “have they, the people who were as enemies and adversaries bound, narrowed, distressed, besieged and straitened me, the Psalmist” “from my youth” or “from the time of my, the Psalmist's, childhood or early life”. The Psalmist referred to the numerous accounts when his opposition bound and distressed him from the time he was a child.
The verse continues, “... may Israel now say:” The Psalmist added the words, “may Israel” or “let, allow and permit Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “now say” which means “at this time and moment utter, declare and proclaim” the words written in our next verse. The Psalmist desired that the people of “Israel” at this time utter, declare and proclaim that which is written in our next verse.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the numerous amounts of opportunities when his opposing foes distressed him, and he wanted the nation of “Israel” to proclaim the words in our next verse. God is aware of our numerous troubles and trials, and our greatest “affliction” is caused by the sin in our lives. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be with us even when people oppose us and cause us distress.
Next time the Psalmist says, “they have not prevailed against me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
