Trodden Down - Psalms 119:118

In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “Hold you me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto your statutes continually”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse one hundred and eighteen of Psalms the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “you have trodden down all them that err” where we read,

You have trodden down all them that err from your statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.

The verse begins, “You have trodden down all them that err from your statutes: The Psalmist began with the words, “you have trodden down” or “you, Jehovah God, have tossed aside, rejected and made light of” “all them that err” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people both male and female who go astray, stray, swerve, meander, reel and commit the sin of ignorance or inadvertence” “from your statues” or “separate and apart from your, Jehovah God's, ordinances, limits, prescribed tasks and portions, resolve, boundaries and enactments”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God made light of everyone of the people who strayed and meandered from His commandment and ordinances.

The verse continues, “for their deceit is falsehood. The Psalmist added the words, “for their deceit” or “because, since and on account that their, the people who err from Jehovah God's statutes whether male or female, exist as treacherous and fraudulent” “is falsehood” which means “exist as disappointing, wrong and vain”. The Psalmist said the reason Jehovah God “trod down” everyone who strayed from His commandments was because their treacherous ways were disappointing, wrong and vain.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist knew Jehovah God contended with the people who strayed away from His ordinances. They lived in a wrong and vain way. God wants people to follow His way of living, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to demonstrate what that is like. Jesus lived a perfect life, and yet He went to the cross to die for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and contend with those who are against Him and us while they live according to their deceptive and empty ways.

Next time the Psalmist says to Jehovah God, “you put away all the wicked of the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
