Understanding Through God's Precepts - Psalms 119:104

In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “How sweet are your words unto my taste! yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse one hundred and four of Psalms the Psalmist said, “through your precepts I get understanding” where we read,

Through your precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

The verse begins, “Through your precepts I get understanding: The Psalmist began with the words, “through your precepts” or “by way and manner of your, Jehovah God's, commandments, appointments, mandates and statutes” “I get understanding” which means “I, the Psalmist, consider, perceive, know, give heed to and have insight”! The Psalmist exclaimed that by way of Jehovah God's commandments and statutes he gained perception and insight.

The verse continues, “therefore I hate every false way. The Psalmist added the words, “therefore I hate” or “thus, then, hitherto and on this ground I, the Psalmist, am odious to, utterly as a foe and enemy to” “every false way” which means “each, the whole, all and everyone of the deceptive, disappointing, wrong and vain manners of living”. The Psalmist said because Jehovah God's “precepts” gave him “understanding”, he considered the wrong in every deceptive way of living.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist knew the importance of having Jehovah God's commandments in his life. They were his guide for living, and any other way was deceptive. God wants the best for our lives, and He gave us His commandments to guide us through life. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us His “way” so that we “hate” every deceptive way available to people.

Next time we begin the next section of Psalms one hundred nineteen with the Hebrew letter “NUN” where the Psalmist says to Jehovah God, “your word is a lamp unto my feet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
