In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, if sinners entice you, consent you not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause. Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit. We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil. Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse. My son, walk not you in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path. For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird”, and in chapter one and verse eighteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “they lay wait for their own blood” where we read,
And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
The verse begins, “And they lay wait for their own blood;”. Solomon began with the words, “and they lay wait” or “and they, the sinners, ambush, hide and lurk” “for their own blood” which means “on behalf of their, the sinners, own bloodshed or bloodthirstiness”. Solomon said the sinners actually hide and lurk toward their own bloodshed and destruction.
The verse goes on to say, “they lurk privily for their own lives.” Solomon continued with the words, “they lurk privily” or “they, the sinners, hide, ambush and lie in wait” “for their own lives” which means “on behalf of their, the sinners, own, personal selves, creature, appetite, mind, living being, soul and seat of emotions and passions”. Solomon said the sinners lie in wait on behalf of their own personal souls and minds.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon said even though the sinners attempt to set traps for others, they actually set them for themselves. Solomon attempted to warn his son of their pernicious lurking, but he also wanted him to know their attempts would be for nothing if he followed his father's instructions. Solomon loved his son and wanted to protect him. God loves us and wants to protect us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make us aware of people who attempt to snare and trap us in their destructive “nets” until we go to be with Him.
Next time Solomon shares about, “the ways of every one that is greedy of gain”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
