Understanding the Fear of the LORD - Proverbs 2:5

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding. If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures”, and in chapter two and verse five of Proverbs Solomon said, “then shall you understand the fear of the LORD” where we read,

Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

The verse begins, “Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD,.... Solomon began with the words, “then shall you understand” or “at that time will you, Solomon's son, perceive, discern, give heed to and know” “the fear” which means “the terror, awe, respect, reverence and piety” “of the LORD” or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Solomon told his son at the time he would “seek and search” for “knowledge” and “understanding” like “silver and hid treasure”, he would discover and know the awe and reverence of Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “... and find the knowledge of God.” Solomon continued with the words, “and find the knowledge” or “and attain, secure, acquire and get the perceptions, discernment, understanding and wisdom” “of God” which means “belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”. Solomon said his son would also discover the understanding and wisdom of the Divine judge and Supreme God when he sought them like “silver and hid treasure”.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how important it is to “seek and search” for God's “knowledge and understanding”. When we look for them, we will have awe and respect to Jehovah God. God is the Creator of the Universe, and He has given us life, breath, sustenance and the ability to know Him. He gave us His Only Begotten Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us not only to desire His “knowledge and understanding”, but also to revere, awe and give glory to Him.

Next time Solomon says, “the LORD gives wisdom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
