The book of Proverbs begins with the words, “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel”, and in chapter one and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said the proverbs were given, “to know wisdom and instruction” where we read,
To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
The verse begins, “To know wisdom and instruction;”. Solomon began with the words, “to know” or “to see, discern, perceive, discern, discriminate and distinguish” “wisdom” which means “skill in war, shrewdness in administration, prudence in religious affairs” “and instruction” or “and discipline, chastening, correction, reproof, warning, restraint, rebuke and doctrine”. Solomon said his “proverbs” were given to gain skill, prudence, discipline and shrewdness in various areas of living.
The verse continues, “to perceive the words of understanding;” Solomon added the words, “to perceive” or “to understand, consider, observe, give heed to and distinguish” “the words of understanding” which means “the utterances, speeches, sayings, promise and command pertaining to discernment, meaning and faculty”. Solomon said his “proverbs” were provided to equip people with the ability to observe and distinguish the meaningful utterances and speeches related to discernment.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon provided his “proverbs” so the people reading and listening to them would discern and discover skill and correction in their lives. By observing them, the readers and listeners would manage their lives according to God's “wisdom”. Jehovah God desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, we have made the most wise decision we will every make. Because we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us His ways of “wisdom” and “understanding” for which we shall praise Him for all eternity.
Next time Solomon says the Proverbs were given, “to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
