Inclining Your Ear Unto Wisdom - Proverbs 2:2

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments with you”, and in chapter two and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “incline your ear unto wisdom” where we read,

So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding;

The verse begins, “So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, .... Solomon began with the words, “so that you incline your ear” or “in such a manner that you, Solomon's son, make attentive, listening, hearkening and regarding your, Solomon's son's, physical ear and mental and spiritual faculties” “unto wisdom” which means “toward shrewdness, prudence and skillfulness”. Solomon presented the idea of his son not only receiving and concealing his words, but also hearing and hearkening to shrewdness and prudence.

The verse continues, “... and apply your heart to understanding;” Solomon added the words, “and apply your heart” or “and stretch out, extend, offer, bend and turn your, Solomon's son's, soul, mind, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and passions” “to understanding” which means “toward intelligence, insight, skill, caprice and reason”. Solomon included the concept of his son extending and turning his soul and mind toward intelligence and reason.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how he wanted his son to cause his hearing and understanding to be toward wise words and to extend his soul and mind toward intelligence and insight. God knows the same for us, and He provided these words of Solomon to speak into our present situations. God loves us, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for our sins, we have the opportunity to believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to turn our “ear” toward His wise words and to extend our souls toward His insight and skill.

Next time Solomon says to his son, “if you cry after knowledge”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
