In the book of Psalms we read the words of King David and other Psalm writers as they shared about life looking toward a heavenly standpoint. We learned that we are to consider, cry out, appeal to and praise Jehovah God, and regardless of what we are going through, God is with us. In the book of Proverbs we are able to sit as it were under the feet of King Solomon who was born into royalty and exposed to his father King David whose heart was after God. (1 Samuel 13:14) We are able to glean from practical application of knowledge that was given to Solomon by Jehovah God when his father David died and Solomon became king of Israel. Solomon knew the task at hand was beyond his own ability, so he asked Jehovah God for “an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and bad”. God asked Solomon “what shall I give you” (See 1 Kings 3:1-15), and Solomon desired God's wisdom. This should be our desire as well. We should remember that the Holy Spirit of God inspired the words that were written by Solomon (See 2 Timothy 3:16-17), and they are to be applied to our lives regardless of our station in life. The book of Proverbs gives wisdom for living as a child, a young person, a father, mother, business person, employer, employee and managing other relationships we have in the world. God wants us to know His wisdom for living, and under His guidance through the words of Solomon which are provided in this book, we will learn as we grow in our personal relationship with Him.
The name “Solomon” means “peace”, and he was the “son of David by Bathsheba and third king of Israel”. He authored the book of Proverbs, Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes”, and we are able to ask Jehovah God through His Son Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins, to provide His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live according to these words of wisdom as laid out by Him through Solomon. Let us give honor, praise, glory and thanksgiving to God for giving us His wisdom in this book.
Next time we begin the book of Proverbs and we shall unpack the first verse where Solomon wrote, “the proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
