In Psalms one hundred and fifty the Psalmist said, “Praise you the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness”, and in chapter one hundred and fifty and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “praise him with the sound of the trumpet” where we read,
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
The verse begins, “Praise him with the sound of the trumpet:”. The Psalmist began with the words, “Praise him” or “give adoration and thanksgiving to him, Jehovah God” “with the sound of the trumpet” which means “by the use of the blast belonging to the cornet or curved horn as giving a clear sound”. The Psalmist called upon his readers and listeners to give Jehovah God adoration, thanksgiving and worship by the use of the blast of the cornet or curved horn.
The verse goes on to say, “praise him with the psaltery and harp.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “praise him” or “give adoration and thanksgiving to him, Jehovah God” “with the psaltery and harp” which means “by the use of the skin-bottle, jar, pitcher, lute, guitar or musical instrument and the lyre or stringed instrument”. The Psalmist exhorted his readers and listeners to give adoration and thanksgiving to Jehovah God with the skin-bottle, jar, lute, guitar, musical instruments and lyre.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist wanted the people who were listening to and reading his words to employ musical instruments to give “praise” and worship unto God. Jehovah God is worthy of our best efforts in singing and playing songs that honor and glorify Him. He gave us His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to worship Him with our voices and musical instruments for all eternity.
Next time the Psalmist says, “Praise him with the timbrel and dance”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
