Let Us Swallow Them Up Alive - Proverbs 1:12

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, if sinners entice you, consent you not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause”, and in chapter one and verse twelve of Proverbs Solomon tells his son what to do if they say, “let us swallow them up alive as the grave” where we read,

Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

The verse begins, Let us swallow them up alive as the grave;. Solomon began with the words, “let us swallow them up alive” or “allow and permit us, the sinners and Solomon's son, to engulf, squander, cover, eat up and destroy them, the innocent, while they are lively, active, flowing and fresh” “as the grave” which means “like unto sheol, the underworld, hell and the pit”. Solomon shared how the sinners might ask his son to join them in destroying or killing innocent people like unto the underworld or the pit.

The verse goes on to say, “and whole, as those that go down into the pit:” Solomon continued with the words, “and whole” or “and entire, sound, complete and fully”, “as those that go down into the pit” which means “like unto the people who decline, march down, sink down and descend into a cistern, dungeon or well”. Solomon said “sinners” may want his son to completely destroy the innocent like unto people who descend into a well or dungeon.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn more from Solomon about what “sinners” might entice his son to do. They might ask him to completely destroy the innocent people even like those who descend into a dungeon or hell. These “sinners” are vicious, and they care nothing about other people. God, however, loves everyone, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from those who would entice us to commit wickedness, evil and death against people who are innocent in the world.

Next time Solomon tells his son what to do if they say, “we shall find all precious substance”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
