In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction”, and in chapter one and verse eight of Proverbs Solomon said, “my son, hear the instruction of your father” where we read,
My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother:
The verse begins, “My son, hear the instruction of your father, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “my son” or “my, Solomon's male offspring and progeny”, “hear the instruction” which means “give audience, listen, pay attention and understand the discipline, chastening and correction” “of your father” or “belonging to your, Solomon's son's, male progenitor and ancestor”. Solomon called upon his male child to listen and pay attention to him.
The verse continues, “... and forsake not the law of your mother:” Solomon added the words, “and forsake not the law” or “and do not leave, cast off, reject or abandon the direction, instruction, special codes of law, customs and manners” “of your mother” which means “belonging to your, the son of Solomon's, female progenitor and ancestor”. Solomon told his son not to abandon the customs and manners that his “mother” taught him.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon turned his attention to his “son”. He knew that he and his mother were giving good advice and wisdom to their son for living, and when a mother and father have Jehovah God in awe and respect, He passes His wisdom on to them for which they in turn give their “wisdom” and advice to their children. God loves us and desires to have a personal relationship with us like a parent to a child. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the importance of giving heed to the wise instructions of our parents for living in this world.
Next time Solomon says, “they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
