The Beginning of Wisdom - Proverbs 1:7

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels. To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings”, and in chapter one and verse seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” where we read,

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The verse begins, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge:. Solomon began with the words, “the fear of the LORD” or “the terror, awe, respect, reverence and piety pertaining to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “is the beginning of knowledge” which means “exists as the first, best, choice and chief parts of discernment, skill, understanding and wisdom”. Solomon shared how having awe and respect to Jehovah God is the chief component to having discernment and wisdom.

The verse goes on to say,but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Solomon continued with the words, “ but fools” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover people who despise wisdom, mock when guilty, are quarrelsome and licentious” “despise wisdom” which means “hold in utter contempt and as insignificant shrewdness and prudence in ethical and religious affairs” “and instruction” or “and discipline, correction and chastening”. Solomon said people who and despise wisdom hold an utter contempt for shrewdness, prudence, discipline and correction.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how important having awe and respect toward Jehovah God is the chief characteristic for gaining discernment, skill and understanding. People who mock and quarrel hold prudence and shrewdness in contempt, and they resist discipline and correction. God wants us to be wise, but we must revere Him and be willing to receive His instruction and correction or we dismiss His ways. God gave us His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, and when we receive Him into our lives, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us not only His “wisdom”, but also the willingness to receive His instruction.

Next time Solomon says, “my son, hear the instruction of your father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
