They Hated Knowledge - Proverbs 1:29

In the book of Proverbs Solomon shared how wisdom says, “I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes. When your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me”, and in chapter one and verse twenty-nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “they hated knowledge” where we read,

For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

The verse begins, For that they hated knowledge, .... Solomon began with the words, “for that they hated” or “because, since and on account that they, the people who refused and rejected the words of wisdom, were odious, as foes and enemies to” “knowledge” which means “perception, skill, cunning, discernment and understanding”. Solomon said the reason people who refused and rejected the words of wisdom was because they were odious to and as enemies of discernment and understanding.

The verse continues, “... and did not choose the fear of the LORD:” Solomon added the words, “and did not choose” or “and in no way elected, decided or selected” “the fear of the LORD” which means “the awe, reverence, terror and moral dread belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Solomon said the people who refused and rejected the words of wisdom in no way elected and decided to have reverence and awe toward Jehovah God.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the reason that wisdom did not respond to people who refused and rejected his words. They were as adversaries and foes to skill, discernment and understanding, and they refused to elect to have reverence and awe toward Jehovah God. Anyone who refuses God's salvation and wisdom do so to their own demise. God loves us and desires the best for our lives. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind to prove His love for us, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us His wisdom as we “love” His “knowledge” and remain in awe of Him.

Next time Solomon says, “they would none of my counsel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
