In the book of Proverbs Solomon said “My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments with you. So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding”, and in chapter two and verse three of Proverbs Solomon continues to share with his son by saying, “if you cry after knowledge” where we read,
Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding;
The verse begins, “Yes, if you cry after knowledge, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “yes, if you cry” or “even so, also and indeed, whether and in case you, Solomon's son, call out, proclaim, shout aloud, utter a loud sound, summon and have an invitation” “after knowledge” which means “for understanding, discernment and wisdom”. Solomon presented the idea in case his son should call out and invite understanding and discernment.
The verse goes on to say, “... and lift up your voice for understanding;” Solomon continued with the words, “and lift up your voice” or “and appoint, put on, set, assign, designate and constitute your, Solomon's son's, sound, noise and proclamation” “for understanding” which means “toward intelligence, skill and insight”. Solomon also included the concept of his son raising the sound of his uttered words toward skill and insight.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon wanted his son not only to desire wisdom and intelligence, but also to shout aloud for them. In order for a person to learn, they must first learn to want to learn, and God is willing to put a desire for His wisdom within every person who asks Him. God loves us, and He proved His love by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we humble ourselves and surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His wisdom and understanding when we have occasion to use His wise words and ways. (See James 1:5)
Next time Solomon shares about seeking wisdom like, “silver” and “hid treasure”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
