Vainly Spreading the Net - Proverbs 1:17

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, if sinners entice you, consent you not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause. Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit. We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil. Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse. My son, walk not you in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path. For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood”, and in chapter one and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “surely in vain the net is spread” where we read,

Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

The verse begins, “Surely in vain the net is spread .... Solomon began with the words, “surely in vain” or “yes, indeed, since and because for nothing, without cause, gratuitously and undeservedly” “the net is spread” which means “the catching trap or snare existed as scattered, winnowed, compassed and dispersed”. Solomon said the snares and traps of the sinners was dispersed and scattered for nothing.

The verse continues, “... in the sight of any bird.” Solomon added the words, “in the sight” or “within the physical eye or mental and spiritual faculties” “of any bird” which means “belonging to all, the whole, each, every and the total amount of winged or flapping birds”. Solomon said the trapping net was set directly in the vision of all the birds the sinners attempted to catch.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the “sinners” were spreading their trapping “nets” without cause, and yet, every “bird” they attempted to catch would easily see their snares. God knows there are people who attempt to trap or catch others to destroy them, and they are revealed by God when a person commits their lives to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and expose people and snares that are meant to destroy us.

Next time Solomon says, “they lay wait for their own blood”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
