In Psalms one hundred and two the Psalmist said, “My enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me. For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping, because of your indignation and your wrath: for you have lifted me up, and cast me down”, and in chapter one hundred two and verse eleven of Psalms the Psalmist said, “my days are like a shadow that declines” where we read,
My days are like a shadow that declines; and I am withered like grass.
The verse begins, “My days are like a shadow that declines;” The Psalmist began with the words, “my days” or “my, the Psalmist's, sunrises to sunsets and sunsets to sunrises” “are like a shadow” which means “exist similar in and in likeness to defensive shade or protection” “that declines” or “that stretches out, extends, bends and spreads”. The Psalmist said his sunrises to sunsets and sunsets to sunrises exist like the protective shade that stretches out, spreads and fades away.
The verse continues, “and I am withered like grass.” The Psalmist added the words, “and I am withered” or “and I, the Psalmist, exist as confounded, ashamed and utterly shrivel away” “like grass” which means “similar and in likeness to herbage, green plants and tender shoots”. The Psalmist repeated the idea he spoke of in verse four of this chapter which described his life being like shriveled away herbage or tender shoots.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist described the fading away of his “days” and the temporary nature of his time. Because the Psalmist was suffering from affliction, he felt his time was not only fleeting, but also vanishing. Our times are in God's hand, (See Psalm 31:15) and He has a plan and purpose for us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and assure us that even when we feel like our lives are fleeting and fading away, He will be with us forever and ever.
Next time the Psalmist says, “you, O LORD, shall endure for ever”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
