Defiled with Their Own Works - Psalms 106:39

In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist said the people of Israel, “sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse thirty-nine of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the people of Israel were, “defiled with their own works” where we read,

Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.

The verse begins, Thus were they defiled with their own works, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “thus were they defiled” or “then, therefore, wherefore and on this account the people of Israel were unclean, impure and profane” “with their own works” which means “by the use of their, the people of Israel's, own personal acts, deeds and labors”. The Psalmist said the people of Israel became unclean and profane because they sacrificed their children to idols.

The verse goes on to say,... and went a whoring with their own inventions. The Psalmist continued with the words, “and went a whoring” or “and committed fornication, became as a harlot and were unfaithful to God” “with their own inventions” which means “by the use of their, the people of Israel's, own personal deeds, practices and acts”. The Psalmist said the people of Israel committed spiritual adultery and fornication against Jehovah God by the use of their own wicked practices and deeds.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist concluded that the people of Israel made themselves unclean and defiled when they committed spiritual fornication with the false idols of the land of Canaan. They forsook Jehovah God, and worshiped demonic images instead of Him. God knew the people of Israel would face tragedy if they bowed to any other god than Him, and the same is true today. God sent His only Begotten Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect us from the practices and acts that keep us from destruction and having a personal relationship with Him. Let us give praise, honor and worship to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus for providing the only way for eternal salvation and showing us how to forsake all other gods to serve only Him. (See John 14:6)

Next time the Psalmist shares how, “the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
