Give Thanks Unto the LORD - Psalms 136:1

In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist employs the words, “for his mercy endures for ever” in all twenty-six verses because it is important to remember that God's goodness, kindness and faithfulness lasts eternally. In verse one of chapter one hundred and thirty-six of Psalms the Psalmist said, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good” where we read,

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever.

The verse begins, “O give thanks unto the LORD; The Psalmist began with the words, “O give thanks” or “O grant and bestow thanksgiving, laud and praise” “unto the LORD” which means “to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist exhorted his readers and listeners to bestow thanksgiving and praise upon Jehovah God.

The verse continues, “for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever. The Psalmist added the words, “for he is good” or “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, exists as pleasant, agreeable, excellent, rich and valuable”: “for his mercy” which means “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” or “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist declared that Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and these qualities shall remain eternally.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist exhorted everyone reading and listening to his words to bestow thanksgiving and praise upon Jehovah God, and he emphasized the everlasting goodness and kindness that is within God. God loves people, and He will share His qualities with every person who yields their life to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to be among the people who give Him honor, praise and glory forever and ever.

Next time the Psalmist says, “O give thanks unto the God of gods”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
