In Psalms one hundred and thirty nine David said, “Surely you will slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, you bloody men”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty nine and verse twenty of Psalms David said, “they speak against you wickedly” where we read,
For they speak against you wickedly, and your enemies take your name in vain.
The verse begins, “For they speak against you wickedly, ...” David began with the words, “for they speak” or “because, since and on account that they, the wicked bloody men, utter, declare and proclaim” “against you wickedly” which means “in opposition to you, Jehovah God, in a criminal, evil, lewd and mischievous manner”. David said Jehovah God would “slay the wicked” because they make declarations in opposition to Him in lewd and mischievous ways.
The verse continues, “... and your enemies take your name in vain.” David added the words, “and your enemies” or “and your, Jehovah God's, hating foes and adversaries” “take your name in vain” which means “lift up, bear, carry and sustain your, Jehovah God's, fame, reputation and glory in emptiness, vanity, falsehood and nothingness”. David said the hating adversaries of Jehovah God carry His fame, reputation and glory in a false and empty manner.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David was aware of the wicked people making evil and false statements in opposition to Jehovah God. These people carry Jehovah God's fame and reputation in an empty and “vain” manner. There are many people like this today as Jesus said, “This people draw near unto me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me”. (See Matthew 15:8) God desires more than declarations from us concerning our relationship with Him. He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us that vengeance belongs to Him against anyone who opposes Him. (See Romans 12:19)
Next time David asks, “Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
