God Slew Og - Psalms 136:20

In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “slew famous kings: for his mercy endures for ever. Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse twenty of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God slew, “Og the king of Bashan” where we read,

And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endures for ever:

The verse begins, “And Og the king of Bashan: The Psalmist began with the words, “and Og” or “and Og whose name means long-necked and was the” “the king of Bashan” which means “the Amorite king of Bashan whose name means fruitful and one of the last representatives of the giants of Rephaim”. (See Numbers 21:33; Deuteronomy 3:1-5) The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God also destroyed “Og” who was the royal Amorite ruler and leader from the area of “Bashan”.

The verse goes on to say, “for his mercy endures for ever. The Psalmist continued with the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist once more shared how Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and for all eternity these characteristics shall remain.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist specifically named another royal ruler that He slew within the land of Canaan. “Og” also opposed the people of Israel when they entered the land promised by Jehovah God. God took care of the people of Israel, and He desires to do the same for every person who yields their life to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and demonstrate His power and authority over all the rulers and leaders in the world.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “gave their land for an heritage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
