In Psalms one hundred and forty David said, “Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man. Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war”, and in chapter one hundred and forty and verse three of Psalms David said, “they have sharpened their tongues like a serpent” where we read,
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.
The verse begins, “They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent;” David began with the words, “they have sharpened their tongues” or “they, the wicked and cruel people, have whet, pricked, pierced and inculcated the wedges in their mouths used for tasting and speaking” “like a serpent” which means “similar and in likeness to a fleeing snake”. David shared how the wicked and cruel people whet their “tongues” like a fleeing or coiled snake.
The verse continues, “adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.” David added the words, “adders' poison”” or “coiled up viper venom or burning anger and rage” “is under their lips” which means “exists beneath their, the wicked and cruel people's, language, speech, edge, prating and talk”. “Selah” or “lift up, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. David said poisonous venom like that which is in the viper exists within the language and speech of the wicked and cruel people, and those reading and listening to these words are to pause and meditate upon this idea.
When we meditate upon David's words in this verse, we learn more about the cruel and wicked people who were opposed to him and his people. God knows the evil speaking of the wicked, and they shall give an account for every word they speak. Jesus said, “every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (See Matthew 12:36) , and because God knows His judgment is pending, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (Even the speaking sins) When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and contend with the venomous speech of every person who is in opposition to Him. This is a promise which is worthy of meditating upon every day.
Next time David says, “Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
