In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said of Jehovah God that He, “by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endures for ever. To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse seven of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “made great lights” where we read,
To him that made great lights: for his mercy endures for ever:
The verse begins, “To him that made great lights:” The Psalmist began with the words, “to him that made” or “to him, Jehovah God, who fashioned, accomplished and produced” “great lights” which means “massive, numerous and abundant amounts of luminous heavenly bodies such as the moon, sun, planets and stars”. (See Genesis 1:14-19) The Psalmist referred to when Jehovah God created the magnificent celestial bodies within the skies.
The verse continues, “for his mercy endures for ever.” The Psalmist added the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist repeated the idea that Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and these characteristics of God shall last throughout eternity.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist continued to share about God creating the universe. God is worthy of our praise and thanksgiving because He made everything. He gave us life, breath and sustenance for our lives, and if that wasn't enough, He provided His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for our sins so that when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to honor Him for creating the “great lights” within the skies.
Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God made, “the sun to rule by day”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
