In Psalms one hundred and forty David said, “O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle”, and in chapter one hundred and forty and verse eight of Psalms David said, “grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked” where we read,
Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device;
lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
The verse begins, “Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device;” David began with the words, “Grant not” or “do not put, set, give, bestow, permit, consecrate or dedicate”, “O LORD” which means “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “the desires” or “the wants and hopes” “of the wicked” which means “belonging to the criminal, guilty of crimes and hostile to God”: “further not” or “do not furnish, promote, issue or cause” “his wicked device” which means “his evil and pernicious plans”. David appealed to Jehovah God not to allow or permit the wants, hopes or pernicious plans of the evil people.
The verse continues, “lest they exalt themselves. Selah.” David added the words, “lest they exalt” or “or otherwise they, the wicked one, uplift, rise up and extol” “themselves” which means “their own selves”. “Selah” or “lift up, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. David said the “wicked” people would extol their own selves if Jehovah God did not prevent them from gaining their “desires” and “wicked devices”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how David turned his enemies over to Jehovah God. Rather than receiving their desires, David wanted God to eliminate their “wants and hopes”. “Wicked” people tend to boast when they fulfill their desires, and because God shall contend with every evil person, He offers the opportunity to receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of everyone to be their “Savior and Lord”. When we submit our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make a defense against His wicked enemies and ours.
Next time David shares about, “those that compass me about”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
