O Give Thanks Unto the LORD - Psalms 136:3

In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “O give thanks to the Lord of lords” where we read,

O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endures for ever.

The verse begins, “O give thanks to the Lord of lords: The Psalmist began with the words, “O give thanks” or “O grant and bestow thanksgiving, laud, praise and worship” “unto the Lord of lords” which means “to the master, owner and sovereign One over all masters, owners and sovereign ones”. The Psalmist instructed his readers and listeners to bestow adoration, praise and thanksgiving to Jehovah God who is above all other masters and sovereign ones.

The verse continues, “for his mercy endures for ever. The Psalmist added the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist again said Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and these qualities shall remain eternally.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist wanted his readers and listeners to bestow thanksgiving to Jehovah God because He is the “LORD of lords”. No one exceeds Him in power, sovereignty and rule, and those who are wise yield themselves to Him. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide an opportunity to give the “LORD of lords” praise for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “alone does great wonders”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
