Jehovah Smote Great Kings - Psalms 136:17

In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse seventeen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “smote great kings” where we read,

To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endures for ever:

The verse begins, “To him which smote great kings: The Psalmist began with the words, “to him which smote” or “to him, Jehovah God, who beat, killed, destroyed and slayed” “great kings” which means “strong and mighty royal rulers and leaders”. The Psalmist referred to how Jehovah God destroyed the mighty rulers who were against the people of Israel.

The verse continues, “for his mercy endures for ever. The Psalmist added the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist again recalled how Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and these qualities will last perpetually.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist continued to share about Jehovah God's care for the people of Israel after He delivered them from “Egypt”. God loves the nation of Israel, and He called them specifically because they were to be the nation through whom “all nations” should “be blessed”. (See Genesis 18:18; 22:18; 26:4 and Galatians 3:8) God sent His Son Jesus into the world through the nation of Israel, and Jesus was to die on the cross for the sins of every person. When we put our faith and trust in Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us about His power and might over rulers and leaders throughout the world.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “slew famous kings”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
