Let Burning Coals Fall Upon Them - Psalms 140:10

In Psalms one hundred and forty David said, As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them”, and in chapter one hundred and forty and verse ten of Psalms David said, let burning coals fall upon themwhere we read,

Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire;

into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

The verse begins, Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; David began with the words, “let burning coals” or “allow and permit hot and glowing embers” “fall upon them” which means “totter, shake, slip, be moved and overthrown on them, the wicked people who opposed David and his people”: “let them be cast” or “allow and permit them, the wicked people who opposed David and his fellow countrymen, to be thrown, knocked out and tossed” “into the fire” which means “in the burning fiery and hot flames”. David wanted Jehovah God to allow hot and glowing embers to rain down upon the wicked people who opposed him, and he desired that they be thrown into hot burning flames.

The verse continues, “into deep pits, that they rise not up again.” David added the words, “into deep pits” or “into the watery floods or abyss”, “that they rise not up again” which means “so they, the wicked people who opposed David and his people, would never stand, arise or come on the scene another time”. David appealed to Jehovah God to cast the wicked people who opposed him into watery floods so that the result would be that they would never stand up or come on the scene again.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David wanted his foes to be destroyed and eliminated by Jehovah God. “Burning coals”, “cast into the fire” and thrown into “deep pits” should certainly take care of them, however, David wanted judgment upon them to be so horrific that they would never come on the scene again. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and save us from the judgment and vengeance that He will certainly bring upon those who oppose Him and His people. (See Romans 12:19)

Next time David says, let not an evil speaker be established in the earth, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
