In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “slew famous kings: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse nineteen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God slew, “Sihon king of the Amorites” where we read,
Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endures for ever:
The verse begins, “Sihon king of the Amorites:” The Psalmist began with the word, “Sihon” whose name means “warrior” and was the “king of the Amorites” which means “chief, prince and royal leader belonging to the Amorites whose name means a sayer and was one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the Jordan who were dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from Egypt”. (See Numbers 21:21,23; Deuteronomy 2:30-37) The Psalmist shared about a specific royal ruler from the people in Canaan called Amorites who was named “Sihon” whom Jehovah God destroyed.
The verse continues, “for his mercy endures for ever.” The Psalmist added the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist repeated his words about Jehovah God being pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and since He does not change, these characteristics will last from everlasting to everlasting.
When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn how he began to write specifically concerning the “kings” Jehovah God destroyed on behalf of the nation of Israel. “Sihon” thought he could resist the people of Israel, however, he underestimated the God they served. Many do so today, and when we consider that this same God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, we should humble ourselves, repent of our sins, receive His forgiveness and inherit the eternal life He offers to all who believe and trust in Him.
Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God slew, “Og the king of Bashan”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
