God Smote Egypt's Firstborn - Psalms 136:10

In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endures for ever. To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endures for ever. To him that made great lights: for his mercy endures for ever. The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endures for ever. The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse ten of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God “smote Egypt in their firstborn” where we read,

To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endures for ever:

The verse begins, “To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: The Psalmist began with the words, “to him that smote Egypt” or “to him, Jehovah God, who beat, slayed, killed and destroyed Egypt whose name means land of the copts and is a country at the northeastern section of Africa, adjacent to Palestine, and through which the Nile flows” “in their firstborn” which means “within the males who were born first in the families”. (See Exodus 11:5,6; 12:29) The Psalmist recalled how Jehovah God killed all the “firstborn males” in the nation of “Egypt”.

The verse goes on to say, “for his mercy endures for ever. The Psalmist continued with the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist repeated the idea that Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and these qualities shall last perpetually.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist remembered when Jehovah God killed the “firstborn” males in “Egypt”. This was the last of the plagues of judgment God brought upon “Egypt” because the Pharaoh would not allow His people, the people of Israel, to go. No one was able to stop God, and the only way to avoid His judgment was to have blood applied to the lentil and doorpost of their houses. God shall also judge everyone who does not have the blood of His Son Jesus who died for the sins of all mankind applied to their lives, but when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect us from the judgment that shall come upon those who refuse to believe.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “brought out Israel from among them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
