O Daughter of Babylon - Psalms 137:8

In Psalms one hundred thirty seven the Psalmist said, “Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof”, and in chapter one hundred thirty seven and verse eight of Psalms the Psalmist said, “O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed” where we read,

O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed;

happy shall he be, that rewards you as you have served us.

The verse begins, “O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed; The Psalmist began with the words, “O daughter of Babylon” or “O female offspring belonging to Babylon whose name means confusion and was Babel or Babylon, the ancient site and/or capital of Babylonia (modern Hillah) situated on the Euphrates”, “who are to be destroyed” which means “who, the people of Babylon, shall exist as devastated, ruined, spoiled and violently assailed”. The Psalmist declared that the offspring of “Babylon” would indeed be ruined and spoiled.

The verse goes on to say, “happy shall he be, that rewards you as you have served us. The Psalmist continued with the words, “happy shall he be” or “blessed will the person exist who is as follows”, “that rewards you” which means “who pays back Babylon” “as you have served us” or “in the same manner and likeness that Babylon treated the Psalmist and his people”. The Psalmist said the person who avenges him and his people will be reciprocated in the same manner that they have treated them.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist knew the people of “Babylon” would face judgment for their treatment of the people of Israel, and those who carried out this judgment would be blessed. God loves the people of Israel, and although He allowed them to be captured by “Babylon” for a time, they were not to remain that way. God delivered Israel from “Babylon”, and He will deliver us from the penalty of death for our sins when we believe and trust in His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we humble ourselves and yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to love the people He loves so that we may be “blessed” like those who avenged Israel.

Next time he Psalmist shares about another person who shall be, “happy”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
