In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endures for ever. To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse eighteen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “slew famous kings” where we read,
And slew famous kings: for his mercy endures for ever:
The verse begins, “And slew famous kings:” The Psalmist began with the words, “and slew” or “and killed, slayed, destroyed and ruined” “famous kings” which means “ great, majestic and powerful royal rulers, chiefs and leaders”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God destroyed “powerful and majestic” rulers and chiefs who were in opposition to Israel.
The verse goes on to say, “for his mercy endures for ever.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist restated idea that Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and His qualities shall remain eternally.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist continued to share about Jehovah God's power over the ruling authorities who were opposed to Israel. God not only delivered the people of Israel from “Egypt”, but He led them, guided them, went before them and defended them even when powerful leaders rose up against them. God loves Israel, and He loves us. He proved His love toward us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (See Romans 5:8) When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and employ His eternal “mercy” to show us His power over all the rulers in the world.
Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God slew, “Sihon king of the Amorites”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
