How Shall We Sing the LORD's Song? - Psalms 137:4

In Psalms one hundred thirty seven the Psalmist said, “they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion”, and in chapter one hundred thirty seven and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist asked, “how shall we sing the LORD's song?” where we read,

How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?

The verse begins, “ How shall we sing the LORD'S song ... The Psalmist began with the words, “how shall we sing” or “in what way or expression of satisfaction shall we, the Psalmist and his fellow countrymen, make musical and melodic words or odes concerning” “the LORD's song” which means “the musical and melodic words or odes that belong Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist questioned “how” they were to make music with their voices concerning Jehovah God's “song” with the following conditions and circumstances.

The verse continues, “... in a strange land? The Psalmist added the words, “in a strange” or “within an alien and foreign” “land” which means “country, territory, region and district”. The Psalmist added that he and his people were abiding within a foreign country which was also an obstacle to them singing the “LORD's song”.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn why he and his fellow countrymen were unable to “sing” Jehovah God's “song”. They were captives in a foreign country. Location depressed them, and they wondered how they could “sing” when they were in that state. God knows we will have times of sadness, depression and despair, and these times make it difficult be happy and to “sing” praise unto God. Nonetheless, we may always remember that Jehovah God loves us, and He proved His love toward us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His “song” in our hearts regardless of our circumstances and location in the world.

Next time he Psalmist says what should happen, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
