The Earth Stretched Out - Psalms 136:6

In Psalms one hundred thirty six the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endures for ever”, and in chapter one hundred and thirty six and verse six of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “stretched out the earth above the waters” where we read,

To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endures for ever.

The verse begins, “To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: The Psalmist began with the words, “to him that stretched out the earth” or “toward him, Jehovah God, who spread out, stamped, beat and overlaid the country, territory, region, district and world” “above the waters” which means “over and beyond the large bodies of water, water courses and rivers”. The Psalmist said praise and thanksgiving was to be given to Jehovah God because He spread out the land over the large bodies of waters in the world. (See Genesis 1:9)

The verse goes on to say, “for his mercy endures for ever. The Psalmist continued with the words, “for his mercy” or “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” which means “lasts and remains for long duration, unto futurity, everlasting, evermore, perpetually and unto perpetuity”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God is pleasant, good, kind and faithful, and these qualities shall last unto futurity.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist recalled how Jehovah God caused the land of the world to rise over the waters. God is Creator God, and He made all things that are made. (See Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1) He knew mankind fell out of relationship with Him when the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, sinned. (See Genesis 3) From that time on God had a redemption plan to save people by sending His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to honor Him for His power over the earth and seas as we enjoy His eternal nature of goodness, kindness and faithfulness.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “made great lights”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
