If I Forget Jerusalem - Psalms 137:5

In Psalms one hundred thirty seven the Psalmist asked, “How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?”, and in chapter one hundred thirty seven and verse five of Psalms the Psalmist shared what should happen, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem” where we read,

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

The verse begins, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “if I forget you” or “whether and in case I, the Psalmist, do not remember, call to mind or make memory concerning you”, “O Jerusalem” which means “O Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. The Psalmist considered what should happen in case he did not remember the city of “Jerusalem”.

The verse continues, “... let my right hand forget her cunning. The Psalmist added the words, “let my right hand” or “allow and permit my, the Psalmist's, right hand of authority, power, strength and ability” “forget her cunning” which means “ignore, cease to care for and not give attention to her, the Psalmist's, right hand of skill or ability”. The Psalmist said if he “forgot Jerusalem” that his “right hand” should lose it's ability to work in an efficient manner.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how serious the Psalmist was concerning keeping “Jerusalem” within his mind. He thought he should lose his skillful ability to play the harp if he ever “forgot” them. God loves the people of Israel, and He wants us to love His people as well. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to remember “Jerusalem” where Jesus died and was raised again three days later for the sins of the world.

Next time the Psalmist says what should happen, “If I do not remember” Jerusalem, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
