In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “I have remembered your name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept your law”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse fifty-six of Psalms the Psalmist said, “this I had, because I kept your precepts” where we read,
This I had, because I kept your precepts.
The verse begins, “This I had, ...” The Psalmist began with the word, “this” or “the remembrance of Jehovah God's name and keeping of His law in the nighttime” “I had” which means “I, the Psalmist, held, possessed and owned”. The Psalmist said he remembered Jehovah God's fame, reputation and glory and kept His law for the following reason.
The verse goes on to say, “... because I kept your precepts.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “because I kept” or “since and on account that I, Jehovah God, observed, guarded and watched over” “your precepts” which means “your, Jehovah God's, statutes, mandates, appointments and law”. The Psalmist said the reason he was able to recall the reputation of Jehovah God in the nighttime was on account that he observed Jehovah God's law.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn why the Psalmist was able to recall Jehovah God's fame, reputation and glory. He observed God's law, and this same opportunity is available to us. God loves us, and He provided His direction and instruction for life within His law. Mankind, however, violated the law of God, and thereby sinned. Paul the apostle wrote, “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. (See Romans 6:23). In other words, we all sin, and this will cause everyone to die. Jesus died on the cross in our place, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the opportunity to obey and keep His laws as His Holy Spirit leads and guides us into all truth. (See John 16:13)
Next time we begin the next section of Psalm one hundred nineteen which begins with the Hebrew letter “CHETH” where the Psalmist says, “you are my portion, O LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
