The Stone Which the Builders Refused - Psalms 118:22

In Psalms one hundred eighteen the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “I will praise you: for you have heard me, and are become my salvation”, and in chapter one hundred eighteen and verse twenty-two of Psalms the Psalmist shared about, “the stone which the builders refused” where we read,

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

The verse begins with the words, The stone which the builders refused ... The Psalmist began with the words, “the stone” or “the precious and sacred building bolder or rock” “which the builders” which means “that the constructors or fabricators” “refused” or “contemned, rejected, spurned and disdained” has become the following. The Psalmist referred to a specific boulder or “rock” that was rejected and spurned by the erectors of a building.

The verse goes on to say, “... is become the head stone of the corner.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “is become” or “has come to pass, fallen out and happened as” “the head stone” which means “the top, summit, upper part and chief rock or boulder” “of the corner” or “belonging to the pinnacle, bulwark, stay, angle or tower”. The Psalmist said the “stone” that was rejected by the one erecting a building became the “chief” or “main” “stone” by which the remainder of the building was constructed.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist said the “chief cornerstone” of the building which was previously rejected and refused by the “builder” was discovered to be the most important “stone” in the building. This reference was employed by Jesus as He implied that He too was rejected by men but was actually the “chief corner stone” upon which the Kingdom of God would be built. (See Matthew 21:24, Mark 12:11, Luke 20:17 and Acts 4:11) Paul the apostle made reference to this in Ephesians two and verse twenty thru twenty two where he wrote, And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” God gave His Only Begotten Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to become the “building of God” of which He is the “chief cornerstone”.

Next time the Psalmist says, “this is the LORD's doing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
