God Rebuking the Proud - Psalms 119:21

In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “My soul breaks for the longing that it has unto your judgments at all times”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse twenty-one of Psalms the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “you have rebuked the proud” where we read,

You have rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from your commandments.

The verse begins, You have rebuked the proud that are cursed, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “you have rebuked” or “you, Jehovah God, have chided and reproved” “the proud” which refers to “people who are arrogant, insolent and presumptuous” “that are cursed” or “who are execrated, blamed and accursed”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God reproved people who are arrogant, presumptuous, blamed and accursed.

The verse continues, “... which do err from your commandments.” The Psalmist added the words, “which do err” or “who wander, go astray, sin through ignorance and are deceived” “from your commandments” which means “separate and apart from your, Jehovah God's, laws, ordinances and precepts”. The Psalmist said the people who are “proud” and “cursed” live in ignorance and deception apart from the law and precepts of Jehovah God.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the way Jehovah God chided people who are arrogant and presumptuous. Those who act in this manner have gone astray and are ignorant of Jehovah God's laws and precepts. Jesus said, “For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted” (See Luke 14:11), and we are in our proper positions when we are “humble” before God. Paul the apostle wrote this, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (See Philippians 2:5-8). God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from being “proud” and ignorant of His laws.

Next time the Psalmist says to Jehovah God, “remove from me reproach and contempt”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
