Let the Proud Be Ashamed - Psalms 119:78

In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “Let your tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for your law is my delight”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse seventy-eight the Psalmist said, “Let the proud be ashamed” where we read,

Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause:

but I will meditate in your precepts.

The verse begins, “Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: The Psalmist began with the words, “Let the proud” or “allow and permit the arrogant, insolent and presumptuous” “be ashamed” which means “exist as disconcerted, disappointed and put to shame”; “for they dealt perversely with me” or “because, since and on account that they, the people who were proud, have been crooked, perverted, false, subverted and turned upside down alongside me, the Psalmist” “without a cause” which means “not having a single reason or wrongful vanity”. The Psalmist appealed to Jehovah God to allow people who are arrogant to suffer shame because they have been crooked and perverted with him without having a reason for doing so.

The verse continues, but I will meditate in your precepts.” The Psalmist added the words, “but I will meditate” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, the Psalmist, shall commune, ponder and put forth thoughts” “in your precepts” which means “within your, Jehovah God's, statutes, commandments, appointments and mandates”. The Psalmist said he would ponder and put forth thoughts toward Jehovah God's commandments and mandates.

When we meditate upon the Psalmist's words in this verse, we discover how he dealt with people who treated him with arrogance. He prayed and asked God to make them disconcerted even while they subverted him with no reason to do so. The Psalmist's concentration was upon God's commandments and direction for living, and this is a good solution for us as well. God loves us, and His “laws” are meant for our good. When we allow Him to deal with the “proud” who rise up against us and ponder His instructions, we will fulfill His desire to save us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins as we surrender ourselves to Him.

Next time the Psalmist says to Jehovah God, “Let those that fear you turn unto me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
