O Give Thanks Unto the LORD - Psalms 118:29

In Psalms one hundred eighteen the Psalmist said, “You are my God, and I will praise you: you are my God, I will exalt you, and in chapter one hundred eighteen and verse twenty-nine of Psalms the Psalmist said, “O give thanks unto the LORD” where we read,

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever.

The verse begins with the words, O give thanks unto the LORD; The Psalmist began with the words, “O give thanks” or “O bestow, grant and provide laud, confession, adoration and worship” “unto the LORD” which means “toward Jehovah who is the exalted One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist concluded this Psalm with the exhortation to grant worship and adoration to Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “for he is good: for his mercy endures for ever.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “for he is good” or “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, exists as pleasant, agreeable and excellent”: “for his mercy” which means “because, since and on account that his, Jehovah God's, goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “endures for ever” or “lasts or remains for long duration, futurity, everlasting, perpetually, always and unto continuous existence”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God is excellent and agreeable, and His goodness, kindness and faithfulness exists eternally.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist concluded this Psalm by exhorting his readers and listeners to provide thanksgiving and worship to Jehovah God. God is indeed excellent and pleasant, and His goodness, kindness and faithfulness will last forever. This same God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and encourage us to be among the millions of believers who exalt Jehovah God for His wonderful character and benefits toward mankind.

Next time we begin the longest chapter in the book of Psalms and see the Psalmist say, “Blessed are the undefiled in the way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
