In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “I remembered your judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse fifty-three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “horror has taken hold upon me” where we read,
Horror has taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake your law.
The verse begins, “Horror has taken hold upon me ...” The Psalmist began with the word, “horror” or “burning and raging heat” “has taken hold upon me” which means “has grasped, caught, seized and taken possession of me, the Psalmist”. The Psalmist said a burning and raging heat seized him.
The verse continues, “... because of the wicked that forsake your law.” The Psalmist added the words, “because of the wicked” or “since and on account of people who are criminals, guilty of crime, hostile to God and ungodly” “that forsake your law” which means “who leave, depart from, let alone and abandon your, Jehovah God's, direction, instruction, manner, custom and codes of law”. The Psalmist said the reason burning heat captured him was because people who are ungodly and hostile to God have abandoned His direction and instruction.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist was burning within his soul because ungodly people were abandoning God's instructions for life. Vexation of the heart and soul is the response of anyone who watches the behavior of people who have no regard for God's word or His direction for living because God loves people and knows what is best for us. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and comforted by the Holy Spirit when we are vexed in our souls “because of the wicked”.
Next time the Psalmist says, “your statutes have been my songs”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
