In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “Make me to go in the path of your commandments; for therein do I delight”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse thirty-six of Psalms the Psalmist said, “incline my heart unto your testimonies” where we read,
Incline my heart unto your testimonies, and not to covetousness.
The verse begins, “Incline my heart unto your testimonies, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “incline my heart” or “stretch out, extend, turn and bend my, the Psalmist', soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and passions” “unto your testimonies” which means “toward your, Jehovah God's, witness and law”. The Psalmist wanted Jehovah God to bend and turn his soul toward His witness and law.
The verse continues, “... and not to covetousness.” The Psalmist added the words, “and not” or “and no and not in any way” “to covetousness” which means “toward profit, unjust gain or dishonest lucre”. The Psalmist wanted Jehovah God to keep him away from filthy profits and unjust gain.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how the Psalmist wanted Jehovah God to turn his heart toward His law and witness. The implication is that his heart was bent to unjust gain and profit rather than toward God's law, and he needed God to help Him. God wants us to live according to His ways, and when we humble ourselves before Him, repent of our sinful ways and ask Him to establish His law within us, we will be pleasing to Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire for His witness and remove us away from dishonest lucre.
Next time the Psalmist says, “turn away my eyes from beholding vanity”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
