Deal Bountifully with Your Servant - Psalms 119:17

Psalms one hundred nineteen and verse seventeen begins the third section of this Psalm and employs the Hebrew word “GIMEL” which is the third letter of the Hebrew alphabet where the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “Deal bountifully with your servant where we read,

Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live, and keep your word.

The verse begins, Deal bountifully with your servant, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “deal bountifully with” or “recompense, requite, treat well and repay” “your servant” which means “your, Jehovah God's, bondman, manservant and worshiper”. The Psalmist appealed to Jehovah God to recompense and treat His bondman and worshiper in a good way.

The verse continues, “... that I may live, and keep your word.” The Psalmist added the words, “that I may live” or “so I, the Psalmist, might remain alive and sustain life in a prosperous way”, “and keep your word” which means “and guard, observe, have charge of and give heed to your, Jehovah God's, speech, utterance, business, occupation, acts and manner”. The Psalmist said he wanted Jehovah God to recompense and treat him well so he would remain alive to observe His acts and manner of living.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist desired the blessing and recompense of Jehovah God. This would enable him to remain alive to observe God's speech pertaining to life. God wants to be involved in our lives, and He demonstrated His love and care toward us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and treat us well so that we may remain alive to observe and “keep” His “word”.

Next time the Psalmist says, “open you my eyes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
