A Place for the LORD - Psalms 132:5

In Psalms one hundred thirty two the Psalmist said, “LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions: how he swore unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob; Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed. I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids, ...”, and in chapter one hundred thirty two and verse five of Psalms the Psalmist shared how David said, “Until I find out a place for the LORD” where we read,

Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

The verse begins, “Until I find out a place for the LORD, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “until I find out a place” or “even till I, David, secure, attain and acquire a location, space, room or quarter” “for the LORD” which means “on behalf of Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist shared how David would not allow himself to sleep or be drowsy till he discovered a location for Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “... an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. The Psalmist continued with the words, “an habitation” or “a dwelling place, tabernacle or temple” “for the mighty God” which means “on behalf of the strong, powerful Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “of Jacob” or “belonging to Jacob whose name means heel holder or catcher and supplanter and was son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the twelve patriarchs of the tribes of Israel”. The Psalmist said David desired to discover a dwelling place for the powerful Divine judge and ruler belonging to “Jacob” who was Isaac's son.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist shared the reason David vowed not to sleep or allow drowsiness to come upon his eyes. He wanted to “find” a place for God to dwell in, and although God is omnipresent and cannot be confined to any particular place, this was a valiant desire of King David. God wants us to love Him this passionately, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. He gives us an invitation to receive Jesus into our hearts and lives, and when we do, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to honor and praise Him with our service, works and worship.

Next time the Psalmist says, “we heard of it at Ephratah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
