Not Giving Sleep to My Eyes - Psalms 132:4

In Psalms one hundred thirty two the Psalmist said, “LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions: How he swore unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob; Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed”, and in chapter one hundred thirty two and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist shared how David said, “I will not give sleep to my eyes” where we read,

I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,

The verse begins, “I will not give sleep to my eyes, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “I will not give sleep” or “I, the Psalmist, shall in no way or manner grant, bestow, permit or ascribe rest, calm, tranquility and peace” “to my eyes” which means “toward my, David's, physical eyes”. The Psalmist shared how David vowed that he would not allow his “eyes” to rest and go to sleep.

The verse continues, “... or slumber to my eyelids, The Psalmist added the words, “or slumber” or “or drowsiness” “to my eyelids” which means “to my, the Psalmist's, coverings or lids for the eyes”. The Psalmist shared how David promised that he would not allow the lids of his eyes to be drowsy.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist continued to share David's vows and promise to Jehovah God. David wanted to do a work for the LORD, and he was so purposed to do so that he did not want “sleep” or drowsiness to prevent him from accomplishing his goal. God wants us to be this passionate about serving Him, and David was certain to carry out his work. God loves us, and He wants us to have a personal relationship like this with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion to serve Him in such a way that we do not want to give way to sleepiness or drowsiness until we accomplish what He has placed on our hearts.

Next time the Psalmist shares how David said, “Until I find out a place for the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
