Sihon, Og and Canaan Kingdoms - Psalms 135:11

In Psalms one hundred thirty five the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, “smote the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and beast. Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants. Who smote great nations, and slew mighty kings”, and in chapter one hundred thirty five and verse eleven of Psalms the Psalmist shared about, “Sihon, Og and all the kingdoms of Canaan” where we read,

Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan:

The verse begins, “Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “Sihon, king of the Amorites” or “Sihon whose name means warrior and was king or royal ruler and leader of the Amorites whose name means a sayer who was one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the Jordan, dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from Egypt at the time of the conquest and defeated by Moses in Transjordan”, “and Og king of Bashan” which means “and Og whose name means long-necked and was the Amorite king of Bashan whose name means fruitful and was a district east of the Jordan known for its fertility which was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh and one of the last representatives of the giants of Rephaim”. The Psalmist referred to how Jehovah God killed “Sihon” who was the leader of the “Amorites” and “Og” who was the ruler of “Bashan”. (See Numbers 21:21-35)

The verse goes on to say, “... and all the kingdoms of Canaan: The Psalmist continued with the words, “and all the kingdoms” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the sovereignties, dominions and realms” “of Canaan” which means “belonging to Canaan whose name means lowland and was the land west of the Jordan peopled by the descendants of Canaan and subsequently conquered by the Israelites under Joshua”. The Psalmist referred to how Jehovah God destroyed every one of the dominions and realms belonging to “Canaan”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist remembered when Jehovah God destroyed the nations and kings within the land of “Canaan”. God fought on behalf of the people of Israel, and no foreign nation was able to withstand His onslaught. God loves Israel, and He loves people. He protected the people of Israel, and He will protect those who surrender to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be our defense against any foes who attempt to destroy us and keep us from His salvation plan.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, “gave their land for an heritage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
