The Firstborn of Egypt - Psalms 135:8

In Psalms one hundred thirty five the Psalmist said, “Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightnings for the rain; he brings the wind out of his treasuries”, and in chapter one hundred thirty five and verse eight of Psalms the Psalmist said Jehovah God, “smote the firstborn of Egypt” where we read,

Who smote the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and beast.

The verse begins, Who smote the firstborn of Egypt, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “who smote the firstborn” or “who, Jehovah God, beat, slayed and killed the eldest and chief birthed children” “of Egypt” which means “belonging to Egypt whose name means land of the Copts and is a country at the northeastern section of Africa, adjacent to Palestine, and through which the Nile flows”. The Psalmist referred to when Jehovah God killed the first born children in Egypt. (See Exodus 12:12,29-30; 13:15)

The verse continues, “... both of man and beast. The Psalmist added the words, “both of man” or “which included male human beings” “and beast” which means “and male cattle, livestock and animals”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God killed the firstborn male people and animals in “Egypt”.

When we consider the Psalmist's words in this verse, we see how he referred to when the people of Israel were living as captives in the land of Egypt. Because Pharaoh would not allow them to go, the final plague that God sent upon the people of Egypt was that their “firstborn” males were killed. This included their animals. God desires to set people free from the bondage of sin, and He sent His “Only Begotten Son Jesus” into the world to be crucified for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and free us from Satan's power who like the people of Israel under Egypt desires to enslave us for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says Jehovah God, “sent tokens and wonders into the midst of you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
